Fifth Wheels
Fifth wheel trailers connect to a hitch mounted in the bed of a pickup truck instead of behind the rear bumper. That bed-mounted attachment changes everything: more interior space (the front of the trailer extends over the truck bed), better towing dynamics, much larger payload capacity, and a residential-style multi-level interior. The cost: you need a 3/4-ton or 1-ton truck, and you give up your truck bed for a hitch.
Best for
- Full-time RVers
- Snowbirds doing multi-month stays
- Owners who already have a heavy-duty tow truck
Not for
- Half-ton truck owners (most fifth wheels exceed half-ton capacity)
- Buyers wanting to keep their truck bed usable

Frequently asked questions
Can a half-ton truck tow a fifth wheel?
Some lightweight fifth wheels ("half-ton-towable") are designed for half-ton trucks, with pin weights under 1,500 lbs and GVWR under 10,000 lbs. But most fifth wheels are 12,000-18,000+ lbs GVWR and require a 3/4-ton or 1-ton truck.
